Fans, Not Freaks

Detroit Free Press, December 5, 1973

Laura Mundo did not like being disrespected! Propriety is a common theme in her autobiography Belmont and she expects it to be a two-way street. So when Betty De Ramus wrote a column entitled Author Links Ancients to Early UFOs: Personal Controversy, Startling Theories Part of von Daniken Image about the 1973 visit of UFOlogist Erich von Daniken to Schoolcraft College in metro Detroit and used the pejorative "Flying saucer freaks" as the opening words in the first sentence, it incensed the loyal reader and flying saucer fanatic Mrs. Laura. So much so that she wrote a letter to the editor condemning the slur.

I've included the von Daniken article below along with the full page of the Detroit Free Press from November 19th that carried a corollary story entitled Scientist Documents Sightings with the subtitle UFOs? No, But... which likely furthered her ire.
