My recent obsession with Laura Mundo led me to her family tree and a relative who either owns her autobiography or took photos of it in its entirety. As the picture suggests it was Carmella Falzone's artwork on the cover. Carmella was her friend of many years and sometimes benefactor, as were most of Laura's friends and family.
In Belmont, which I've only read 30 pages of so far, she creates a sort of historical fiction out of her life with some names changed, though most of the scenarios seem true enough.to what I know about her. The early pages speak in a very youthful and naive voice and I don't know if this changes as she matures but it comes across as sort of weird, to say the least, but very Laura-esque.
In the passage below she speaks of one of the few keepsakes she took with her when the family moved from Boston to Belmont, Maine when her mother took a job as an in-home servant. They were very poor due to her father abandoning them in the midst of an alcoholic haze and any possessions were precious to the children. Interspersed within the writing crops up mentions of sunspots, atomic energy and other such philosophical statements related to her UFO-religion amalgamation. In the midst of the story she drops the title of a book Doomsday...Coming Up? and her name and address where it could be had. Priceless stuff! There is somewhat of a child-like innocence to her prophecy pushing as she is neither embarrassed or trying to sell you anything but rather is attempting to let you in on a secret of the world which she has uncovered and wants everybody to know about it no matter the personal cost to herself. It's endearing in a way and to my way of thinking quite admirable.
